Buy Fresh, Buy Local

May 2nd is the day, "Opening Day", that is, for Downtown Albertville Farmers Market and we can't wait! Our market runs every Thursday, 3-6 p.m., May through October, rain or shine; and when we say "rain or shine", we mean business. The market is all about our growers as we couldn't do what we do without them. We work hard to ensure we are reliable and open for them as much as possible, barring a severe weather event, so that they always have a place to sell their local produce, meat, eggs, honey, and, well, you name it! Albertville Farmers Market is a state certified farmers market operating under the umbrella of the City of Albertville and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries' State Farmers Market Authority. To describe this designation in layman's terms, we are the "real deal" when it comes to the farmers market niche. To sell at our market, your farm and product must be from Marshall County, or a county that physically touches us which would include: Madison, Jackson, Dekalb, Blount, Cullman, and Morgan Counties; and we allow absolutely no resale. Vendors must provide us with a copy of their grower's permit issued to them, annually, by the extension office of their respective county.

If you ask our growers, they will tell you farmers markets are their livelihood, not just a hobby.

Nearly every vendor at our market is a true grit farmer by trade. Though we completely support and encourage back yard gardeners, Albertville Farmers Market serves to protect the integrity of the intense labor, expense, and business of farming as a career, and thus, we have a strict application process we use to vet our vendors before they are able to sell at the market which includes, again, obtaining paper work from the county extension office of which the prospective vendor resides, as well as farm visits by the Albertville Farmers Market Board of Directors. It's important to us that we are able to verify the products listed on applications by farmers of they are supposedly growing, is actually what's on their farm, so that we can guarantee to our customers their food is coming from right here at home. We also understand that today's generation is decades, if not a century, removed from the farm and agricultural education. We aim to change that.

Our mission at Albertville Farmers Market is to support the development of local, sustainable farming by cultivating a vibrant farmers market that serves as a community gathering place celebrating local farmers, food producers, and artisans.

The AFM provides the community with a great place to buy and sell fresh, locally grown produce. We hope to see the market continue to grow and remain a place where people can get to know their farmers, understand where their food comes from, and enjoy themselves! We're all about sourcing local, supporting and celebrating the farmers and food artisans who make it possible. We want to keep nutrition dollars in our community and provide healthy food to our friends and neighbors.

We kick off this season Thursday, May 2nd, from 3 to 6 pm, downtown Albertville, on Main Street, under our AFM pavilion! This is going to be a very special edition of our farmers market as we have partnered with the Albertville Chamber of Commerce and Second Chance Animal Shelter to bring you three exciting events all under the farmers market roof that Thursday. In conjunction with our market, the chamber will be hosting their "Member Appreciation Cookout", also from 3-6 pm. The Junior Chamber Ambassadors will be hosting a pet adoption on behalf of Second Chance Animal Shelter, and we will be bringing you the freshest food and finds on the mountain! "Alabama's Country Giant" WQSB 105.1 will be broadcasting via live remote from the event so you're sure to get another reminder the day of.

For information regarding upcoming events at this year's AFM, visit us on Facebook @downtownalbertvillefarmersmarket, or call us at 256-891-8202. We can't wait to see you!

A "Ground Breaking" Project, Welcome Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater to Albertville

Sand Mountain Park, Baseball Complex, Championship Field Something "BIG" is coming, something rather unprecedented for Marshall County, AL, much less, Albertville. Something of the magnitude of approximatley 133 acres, buildings of near 300,000 square feet, and more; but, we'll get back to that in a minute. For years, as a municipality, we've struggled to gain the attention we deserve from retailers and developers who have notoriously built just outside of our city limits, often times, in Guntersville, to draw from the lake, or previously, in Boaz, to be near the now decrepit Tanger Outlets. Albertville is three times the size of our neighboring cities ranging 26 square miles, with a population of nearly 30,000. When Wal-Mart, Belk, Lowe's, Staple's, Chik Fil A, Cracker Barrel, Publix, and a vast array of other retailers decided to locate outside of our city limits to the North and South of us, our friends in Boaz and Guntersville began "eating

Census 2020, Good Thing or Scary Thing?

Demonstrators rally outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday to protest a proposal to add a citizenship question in the 2020 Census Mandel Ngan / AFP - Getty Images   https://www.foxnews.com/politics/supreme-court-citizenship-question-to-census Our country experienced a milestone date in April, as we kicked off the one year out mark from the 2020 Census. It's hard to believe the last Census was taken in 2010. To say it, doesn't sound that long ago, but consider where you were nine years ago, how old you were, what you were doing. More importantly, consider technology and how different it looks today. Even nine years ago, the evolution of social media hadn't come full circle to the point it has today. Smartphones, Tablets, and iPads were just becoming known to the majority of society, but most weren't yet household "givens" at that time, as they were just beginning to gain notoriety. I know, that's hard to imagine today!  So, now consider what canvas
